Hellenic Fire Service

MBB BK117C-1

The Hellenic Fire Service operates a small but vital helicopter fleet dedicated to wildfire suppression, rescue operations, and rapid disaster response. Among its key assets are the MBB BK117 variants and the AS332 Super Puma, including aircraft SX‐HFD and SX‐HFE. Both helicopters are normally based at Elefsina, the central hub for Greece’ s firefighting aviation units, where crews remain on alert throughout the year. SX‐HFD, is one of the fleet’ s most versatile aircraft. Although headquartered at Elefsina, it is frequently deployed to locations such as Megara, Rhodes, or Heraklion during the wildfire season, depending on operational requirements. Equipped with a
Bambi Bucket, rescue hoist, medical gear, and an NVG‐compatible cockpit, it supports water‐dropping missions, search and rescue, medevac, and aerial reconnaissance. SX‐HFE plays a similar role, offering exceptional lifting capability and endurance. Like SX‐HFD, it is seasonally redeployed across Greece to match regional fire risks, supporting transport of firefighters, bucket operations, and disaster relief tasks. Together, these helicopters form an essential part of the Greek Fire Service’ s response network, enabling fast intervention, wide‐area coverage, and life‐saving support during Greece’ s challenging wildfire seasons.
