History of Athens Flying Week

Athens Flying Week is one of Europe’ s most dynamic aviation events, and the 2025 edition elevated that reputation even further. This first impression presents some of the participants in the Air show from the unique perspective only The Aviation PhotoCrew can catch. Photographs captured during exclusive flying missions above Greece with the Pink Skyvan. These airborne sessions provide an unmatched view of participating aircraft in their natural environment, highlighting the power, precision, and elegance of flight in ways that ground photography cannot replicate. From fast jets carving through the sky to classic warbirds and modern trainers flying in tight formation, the imagery reveals the energy and emotion behind each aircraft. As photographers work from open ramps, they capture moments from a unique angle, few spectators ever witness. The result is a vivid aerial portrait of Athens Flying Week 2025, seen through the eyes of those who take to the sky to document its most breathtaking scenes.
Every September, as summer fades over Greece, thousands of aviation fans gather at Tanagra Air Base for Athens Flying Week( AFW), now one of Europe’ s most dynamic air shows. Launched in 2012 as a modest event, it has since grown into a major international spectacle featuring advanced aircraft, elite aerobatic teams, and major military demonstration units. It serves as both a celebration of aviation excellence and a tribute to the HAF.
Early editions took place at Tatoi Air Base, where the scenic hills and close in performances drew growing crowds. By 2017, the expanding event moved to Tanagra Air Base, a major Hellenic Air Force( HAF) installation that offered more space, better infrastructure, and the ability to host larger aircraft and audiences. Tanagra has been its home ever since. Today, AFW ranks among Europe’ s premier air shows, drawing participants from France, Belgium, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Switzerland, and many others. The program spans agile aerobatic aircraft, military jets, helicopters, and transport planes, appealing to aviation experts and casual visitors alike.
