Every dollar you raise through this incredible challenge will go towards the
sustainability of the Umatter program, a psychological support program for
burn survivors and their families. Your fundraising efforts will also enable
us to purchase our second Lumenis Ultra Pulse Laser machine for the
Johannesburg area.
The physical pain of a burn is horrific, but the worry, fear, and emotional pain
it causes to the survivor and his/her family can be just as difficult.
Emotional support is a must after a trauma like this and the laser machine
will also help with their scars.
Scars are a painful reminder of their tragedy. Burn disfigurement affects a
child’s body-esteem, self confidence, social interaction and identity. Now
with this revolutionary medical procedure, they have a chance to erase the
past and look into the future.

0-4 years old

under 18 years old

higher than in developed countries
Ý Ý In South Africa approx. 6500 children (1-14Y) die a year from burn related
injuries and 75 % are fluid related burns.

fatalities by educating communities on burn prevention and assist The Avela
Foundation together with The Smile Foundation by offering burn survivors
and their families the crucial psychological support required to prepare them
for the future.
