About the e-Guide

This interactive guide to the Vayots Dzor region of Armenia has been developed in partnership between Armenian Virtual College (AVC)/ Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and My Armenia, a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the Smithsonian Institution.

This guide is meant to inspire travelers to visit the stunning region of Vayots Dzor and deepen the experience of tourists in the destination by providing rich interpretation of the region’s

natural and cultural assets, and providing valuable travel planning information. The information found elsewhere in this guide is put into a simple, interactive map, allowing travelers to conceptualize the region and facilitate travel planning. It was our intention to create the most comprehensive travel resource for the Vayots Dzor region available, but to present this information in a way that is both visually appealing and simple to navigate. The information in this guide is separated into the following chapters:

Chapter 1, “Welcome To Vayots Dzor”, includes an introduction to the region, with brief summaries of the history of Vayots Dzor, the region’s natural heritage, and the living cultural traditions of the people of Vayots Dzor.

Chapter 2, “What to Do?”, the longest chapter in the guide, this section includes exhaustive information on historical, natural, and cultural attractions throughout Vayots Dzor. This information can help travelers understand sites and attractions that may otherwise lack on-site signage and outlines activities for travelers to actively experience these sites. We have full information about the various festivals that occur in Vayots Dzor during the year for each season.

Travelers spending the night in Vayots Dzor will find information about accommodations in Chapter 3, “Where to Stay?”. This chapter has a comprehensive directory of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in Vayots Dzor, with the location, short description, and contact information for each.

Chapter 4, “Where to Eat” has information about restaurants and cafes in Vayots Dzor, in particular those where tourists can sample traditional dishes. Here we also recommend itineraries for 1-day and overnight stays in Vayots Dzor. The itineraries include different themes, including adventure and wildlife, and food and wine.
