As the Capital of Armenia: The Period of the Third Republic (since 1991)

History:

After the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991, and the fall of the Iron Curtain, a new period of transformation began for Yerevan. Due to the irregular, random, and casual constructions, the city began to lose its socialist appearance. The beginnings of the 2000s were a period of a boom in construction. The city center essentially became a vast construction site. As a consequence, the housing rates in the area increased about ten times. A majority of the historic buildings located in the city center were either entirely destroyed or transformed into modern residential buildings, due to commercial and business interests of the time. Only a few structures have been preserved.
