Located 32 km/19.8 mi from Yerevan in the Kotayk marz of Armenia, Mount Hatis (2,528 m/8,294 ft) is another good hiking option near Yerevan. It has volcanic origin and a conical shape with ridges cut by deep ravines. The mount and its surroundings are good for both trekking and mountain biking. Hikers should know that there are underground rescue shelters on the top of the mountain.
When to Hike: Climate
Mount Hatis is best hiked in the period of May to November. The mountain is covered with alpine meadows and prairie vegetations.
Did you know?
Mount Hatis is named after the ancient Armenian god of vegetation, Hatis. It is also known as Mount Shamiram. According to legend, during a battle with Armenian King Ara, Assyrian Queen Shamiram arranged her army on the slopes of Hatis. King Ara the Beautiful, with his armed forces, then took positions on the slopes of Mount Ara. Since then the mountains hold the names of Queen Shamiram and King Ara, respectively.
