Wish Trees

A wish tree is a tree that is turned into an object of wishes. In Armenia, from pagan times, such trees are identified as possessing a special religious or spiritual value. People believe that by tying a

handkerchief on the tree, their wish or prayer will be granted by God. You can see wish trees in

many locations across Armenia like in the Azat River Gorge, Amberd, and Geghard Monastery. Typically, they are found close to churches, monasteries and chapels, and frequently close to a stream or riverbed. The tradition has been preserved even today. It is not common to Armenians only, as the custom also exists in the British Isles. There are pilgrimage sites in areas inhabited by Celtic tribes, especially in Scotland and Ireland, where this tradition is observed.
