Karabagh, which suffered greatly during the war, has not been neglected. Several projects have been completed there or are on the way to completion. After the cessation of hostilities in summer 1994, a street in downtown Stepanakert badly damaged by bombs was renamed Alex Manoogian Street after it was reconstructed with the help of a donation to the AGBU from the Manoogian Simone family. The rest home located near one end of the street, the only one of its kind in Karabagh, provides a haven both for senior citizens who would otherwise have had to fend for themselves, as well as for people of middle age traumatized by the war or the Baku pogroms. It was renovated at the same time the street was, with money drawn from the same budget. This institution’s exceptionally devoted staff has, with limited means, turned it into an oasis of peace.
