SCHOLARCHIPS FOR HIGH DCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS; THE AGBU'S NEW EDUCATIONAL STRATEGY

As we have seen, the 1950s and 1960s witnessed the consolidation of the AGBU-administered school system in the Near East. But this period also rang in another new AGBU commitment in the educational field: the Union now began awarding scholarships to high school and college students. This pioneering initiative reflected the social transformations that had occurred in the Armenian di¬aspora. The economic precariousness that had plagued Armenian communities in the preceding decades was receding; new, solidly established societies enjoying a relatively high standard of living began to emerge. As a result, many families were no longer content to offer their children just a primary education; they wanted to see them earn university degrees. Mentalities had changed considerably; new practices and new symbols were being adopted and, in all the communities of the diaspora, a new social class was coming to the fore.

The AGBU’s educational work in the Middle East proceeded apace in the 1960s and 1970s, which saw the construction of new school buildings and the renovation or expansion of existing schools.
