THE AGBU'S CONTRIBUTION

In February 1923, as we have already seen, Soviet Armenia’s leaders agreed to the relocation of Armenian refugees from the Near East and Europe in Armenia after discussions with Mikayel Papajanian. At the request of the Armenian National Delegation, the League of Nations decided, in September 1923, to shoulder the responsibility for the transfer of fifty thousand Armenian refugees from Greece; it also agreed to meet the costs of reclaiming land in Armenia’s Sardarabad district, where the newcomers were to live.55

The League of Nations created for this purpose, in 1925, a task-force of experts under the direction of its High Commissioner for Refugees, Fridtjof Nansen.
