On 22 October 1926, an earthquake struck the Leninagan area, causing extensive damage, injury, and death. The disaster galvanized all the chapters of the AGBU, which spared no effort to help the victims. Initially, the central board sent £2,000 to Yerevan for emergency disaster relief. Thereafter, all sections of the Union joined in a worldwide campaign to raise relief funds. In the United States, local AGBU chapters collected tens of thousands of dollars; the chapters in Europe raised £16,214.42
