Malezian’s predecessor, Dr. Daghavarian, always refused compensation of any sort for his work, discharging his heavy responsibilities without payment despite rather difficult personal circumstances. In 1905, Daghavarian settled permanently in Cairo with his family and earned his living by receiving patients whenever his administrative duties at the AGBU left him the time to do so.
