When my phone rang one evening last fall, I couldn’t have known that it would end up taking me all the way to Detroit of all places. But that is exactly what happened and I am still shocked and amazed at what I saw and experienced. Like most, I expected to see burned out buildings and blight. But instead, I saw a reinvigorated and bustling downtown, clean streets with art adorned buildings, and yes fashion. No, not just amateur run of the mill fashion. When you hit the streets and one of the first things you see is John Varvatos’s name in lights on the front of his new flagship store (which not only sells his exclusive clothes, but also sells vintage guitars, stereo systems, old records, and has a performance stage that the likes of Alice Cooper and Gene Simmons frequent) you know you’ve happened upon a fashioned forward place.
We not only discovered capable and creative high end designers, but we also stumbled on an entire underground culture of art and fashion throughout the entire city. Our February
issue takes our readers through that journey and introduces them to all of the wonderful things we discovered while in Detroit. We found amazing photographers, modern design studios and sewing factories, and some wonderful vintage clothing stylists and shops.
Apparently we are not the first to hear about this wonderful place.
People in the fashion industry have been leaving their high rent areas in New York City and Los Angeles, and making their way to the Motor City. With incredibly lower costs for both commercial space and housing, it has almost been a no-brainer for most that have relocated here. Even famed bridal designer & consultant Keasha Rigsby from TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress and TV One’s Keasha’s Perfect Dress has discovered Detroit. She recently relocated from New York and purchased a beautiful 3-story historic mansion that she turned into a high end luxury bridal salon and private event space.
With all of Detroit’s rich history and the treasures we discovered there, we decided to devote most of this month’s issue to Vintage style. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did, and if you love adventure or are someone in the fashion industry looking expand your reach or better your bottom line, I suggest you take a short trip and see all of the great things this city offers for yourself!
Cheers and Ciao!
