Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock and trying to avoid the onslaught of warnings that the world is on the brink of irreversible disasters, you’ve probably noticed that your social media news feed is filled with sensational headlines and online activists who claim that we have to change our lifestyles and fix the environment before it is too late. They are trying to outlaw plastic straws, plastic bags, cow farming, fossil fuels, and of course, that evil molecule known as carbon. But while activists point all their fingers at big industry and factory farming, how many of them have thought about the actual clothes they are wearing on their highly woke environmental backs? All of a sudden I hear a symphony of crickets!
Well here is some additional activism for them to consider. According to Common Objective, an organization whose mission is to help members of the fashion industry network and find more sustainable ways to produce their products, the fashion industry is responsible for approximately 5% of all manmade greenhouse gas emissions, with most of them coming from the processes that produce the fabrics that make up the new clothes they produce. And some of the most environmentally unfriendly fabrics that are produced throughout the industry are for swimsuits, which are made from synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester.
Luckily, like any hot trend in the fashion world that spreads like wild fire, there are now swimwear brands who are recognizing this problem and starting to make use of fabrics that are made of recycled synthetic fibers and other materials to produce their swimsuits. Although the use of these recycled fabric materials is a welcomed start, it is not a perfect solution. People are set in their ways. Getting buy-in from customers can be challenging as most aren't yet used to the differences in comfort and feel with these new recycled fabrics.
