AV News 178 - November 2009
Whatever you do, please don't just leave them
on those shelves for the next generation to
deal with. Besides my own photos, I also have,
"passed on" to me, as they say, meaningfully,
lovely collections from two other diligent
photographers who travelled the world. WHAT
DO I DO WITH THEM ?????? See above.
Envoi. I fear that my advice might meet with
horror in some places. Things which now seem
of passing value might one day be defined as
historic. A recent report told us that MGM
destroyed the storehouse and scores of many
Hollywood Film Musicals to make way for a car park. And the BBC once
destroyed early comedy classics so they could erase and re-use the precious
tapes. On the other hand, in favour of conservation where would western
civilisation have been if that ancient library in Alexandria hadn't kept the only
remaining copies of the works of the Greek philosophers? And how much
more interesting our many local museums are when they preserve quite
ordinary things for our kids to coo at. Even "Magic Lanterns" (Thank you,
Colin Balls.) But how many of our own modest collections qualify for
preservation? Is your stuff just land-fill for a car park? Or are you housing a
second "Library of Alexandria"? Think on it.
