AV News 183 - February 2011
Armistice Day by Mike Hesp - Very good music, keeping us focused on
the subject. The zooming worked well and the narrative concentrated
our attention.
Back to the Bone by Rob Wigley - The title of the music was the same
as the title of the sequence, which worked well. Good photos with no
other photographers in shot, difficult to achieve at such an event.
Beauty by Ray Jefferson - A single girl and single images which worked
well. Slight magenta cast on some images - need to keep the girl's
complexion constant throughout the sequence.
Girls on Film by Rob Wigley - No particular sequence, just a collection
of images, despite being the same few girls throughout. Music was
'brassy' and the implication was the girls were 'brassy' as well.
Superbikes by Mike Margiotta - The music could have been better
chosen. The image sizes were varying and should be rationalised, so
that the height on both portrait and landscape images becomes the
same. The unidentified rider appeared as a portrait, but was given no
obvious reason for his appearance.
The Dambusters by Kevin Shipley - The photographer clearly spent
time understanding the program, using panning to simulate movement.
The resolution was rather low. The 3 sequences stopped then started
and could have been linked to reduce the gap and silence between them.
The Men and The Machines by Ray Jefferson - Good use of mono to
give it an archive effect. Good storyline and narrative - strong throughout.
Whitby Goths by Sarah Christian - Appropriate music, but it had a
break. They were willing victims - everyone who dresses up wants to be
photographed! Could have filled the frame better by more close up or
better use of cropping.
Skipool by Jeff Griffiths - When changing from portrait to landscape
images, better linking could be used. No connection between some
images. Good humour with the use of Popeye.
Autumn Shades by Jeff Layer - A limited story, but a very personal
collection of images. Easy transitions, but the bleaching out effect didn't
work well. Plenty of unconnected autumn scenes.
Africa Expedition by Brian White - Lots of different and very good
images. A great location does not always give a great AV as it is the
quality of the images and the way they are put together that makes a
great AV.
A Load of Old Boilers by Peter Clark - Beautiful clean images - very
sharp. Cluttered arena but good photos that stand out from the
background.
Bolton in the Snow by Brian White - Lovely atmospheric and pictorial
images. As a documen х
