Jessops Rose Bowl AV Competition 2011
Jeff Mansell
Saturday 12th November 2011 was the date for The Jessops Rose Bowl
Competition, this year held at Smethwick Photographic Society's Club Room.
This is the audio visual competition for Cemriac, organised this year by
Richard Brown and Malcolm and Maggie Imhoff.
There was a short introduction from Rob Day FACI, the Cemriac Chairman,
who welcomed our judge for the day Ian Bateman FRPS MPAGB. There were
a total of 14 sequences from 12 entrants. Ian commented after each
sequence and he was very positive with his observations giving suggestions
as to how he thought sequences could be improved, (including mine). There
was a varied selection of sequences and the awards were a follows:

Hayange
Ron Davies FRPS
Earlier in 2011 I was amazed to receive an e-mail from Ricardo Zarate asking
me to be a jury member at the Hayange International Festival at the end of
November. To my knowledge this was the first time a Brit from this side of the
Channel had been asked to judge in France. French International juries normally
consist of Frenchmen and French-speaking Belgians with the odd foreigner
thrown in occasionally. This year it seemed that I was to be the (very) odd
foreigner. My fellow jurors were my very good friend Jacques van der Weerdt
from Belgium and a young Frenchman, Vincent Martin, who was full of fresh
ideas. I'd seen some of Vincent's sequences but had never met him. When we
did meet I was amused by his admittance that he was afraid of meeting me
because I was Welsh and he didn't expect to understand my language or accent.
Gilles Lucas-Leclin, one of the organisers, had sent the jury members all 110
entries in batches of 10's and 20's via the internet. We were asked to give each
sequence a grade and a mark out of 20.
There were 4 grades, 1-Eliminate; 2-Weak; 3-Retain and 4-Prizewinner: We
sent our grades and marks to Gilles who produced a ranking table of our
combined scores. Naturally these were not set in tablets of stone but gave us an
indication of merit and areas for discussion.
