In AV News Issue 174 Howard Wilson asked why I crop to 4x3 format rather
than leaving the image in its original 3x2 format. Firstly, as indicated in my
original article, I very often want to align parts of an image and then crop the
excess. It is very rare I use an image exactly as it is taken. Secondly, when
digital projectors first appeared they were projecting in 4x3 format. If the
images are in 3x2 format they don't fill the screen, but have a blank strip top
and bottom which is wasted space. As digital projectors develop, the format
is likely to change, but which Group/Club or individual is able to replace their
projector every couple of years? In the recent Great Northern Festival that
Howard Gregory and I organised we stated in the rules what the format would
be. Hope this clarifies the situation.
