AV News 193 - August 2013

This, the 'August' issue of the
magazine, has traditionally always
been a difficult one to put together.
Usually not a great deal is going on
at this time of year as most of the
groups and societies have closed for
the summer, the competitions are all
over and most people are busily making
their prize-winning sequences for the
coming year.
Well we say 'most people' as (cue
sad violins) your Editors have spent all
of the summer (well at least half of July and that no doubt counts as all the
summer!) slaving away over our hot computer keyboards and reminding,
cajoling and even bribing people to provide us with interesting and informative
copy that you want to read.
Our own 'to do' sequences have sadly had to be put on the 'back burner'
until the magazine is put together and sent off to the printers (cue the full
orchestra!!) We are hopefully going to have the time to tidy up a sequence
ready to enter into the Nationals at Sutton Bonnington.......by the time you are
reading this the deadline for entries will be upon us so hopefully yours will
already be winging its way there!
We have been asked to bring to your attention a recent clarification of the
National Championships Rule 14 - details of this can be found on Page 36.
It is with great sadness that we have to report on the deaths of two more
from our 'AV Family'. Valerie Rawlins - a prolific maker of memorable
humorous sequences from the WAVES AV Group and Margaret Gray from
Northern Ireland. Over the years Margaret and Gordon offered hospitality to
many judges and lecturers when they came to Ireland for RPS and NIPA
events. Both ladies will be sorely missed by all who knew them
Our thanks must go to Howard Bagshaw who, at very short notice,
answered our plea for someone to provide technical articles on various audio
visual techniques. He kindly sent us an article on a method he uses to avoid
accidental overloading when out recoding live sounds, Page 9 and also the
first instalment of an article on the use of Objects and Animation in PTE, Page
48. Deciding what level to pitch this at is always a problem but we think Howard
has got it just about right - there is something for both beginners and dare we
say - even the advance workers!
Please keep sending in the news about your AV activities and let us know
what you would like to see featured in these pages. Write and tell us how you
made your latest sequence, what sparked off the idea? We can all learn from
each other and something you say may just give someone
else a helping hand to get started on their next production.
