AV News 193 - August 2013
'The loves I have' by Martin Fry
and 'Un Homme Honorable' by
Keith Storey and Ron Davies,
were placed 10th and 12th and
both were awarded FIAP
Mention d'Honour or Blue
Ribbons.
Video clips were used in quite
a number of sequences, one by
Matteo Mazzetti, 'Iceland, the
power of Nature', was almost
entirely video. The Grand Prix
winner, 'Effetti
Collateral' (Collateral Effects) by Giacomo Cicciotti, is based on the
Palestinian/Israeli conflict. What is interesting is that the images are from
various press agencies to which the author has access. Bob Bishop's 'Lest
we forget', which won the Adelaide AV Fest earlier this year, although receiving
an acceptance, was felt to have images obtained from the Net. Where is the
line being drawn?
The runner-up, 'JE' by Frederic Michels of France, included some nudity
and caused a few discussions. My French was not up to being able to
understand the text in its entirety but our English-speaking French friends in
the audience translated it as 'erotic imaginings'. That's the polite transcription
of what they said! I doubt if a British AV'er would have produced anything like
it but the French are rather more broad minded than we are.
The
third
placed
sequence,
'Kiribula' by Paolo Grappolini, was
a
beautifully
photographed
sequence, including video, of an
African tribal dance. All in all the
results seemed quite fair although
from the British point of view it was
surprising to see that both Sheila
Davies' sequences, 'A very special
job' and her 'My Quest', together with
Martin Fry's 'Mousehole Cat', all
prize winners in other competitions,
were not awarded acceptances.
The overall impression was of a very well organised festival, run on time, which
should have attracted a far bigger audience, the Italians were very few and
far between, we Brits sometimes outnumbered them. Lorenzo hopes that the
word will spread and next year's festival will be better supported.
See www.avnews.org.uk for the full results and acceptances.
