AV News 193 - August 2013
Just a few comments on what made the prize winning sequences stand out
against a background of ‘a bit grey’ sequences, not bad, but not inspiring, and
when experienced many times become ‘to see and to forget’. There is a huge
difference in expectations for an international show as compared to the annual
camera-club show, there every member has the right to show his creations
and we will appreciate beginners work as well as that of the distinctions holders.
JE - Frédéric Michel (FR)
Trophy Liliane Dorikens 2013
m.objects Creative full version Prize.
A very slow panning technique shows a
man (‘I’) visiting a museum and
contemplating relations between
expectations, tensions, lust and
fulfilment. A difficult, but superb text as
one only seldom finds in AV. The
application of symmetrical elements in
the images has unique suggestive
power.
BEEWUN - Patrick Rottiers (FR)
BFF Trophy, Prize for Best Scenario.
A perfect example of what new ideas can
lead up to. A superb application of high
key black and white suggests the
environment
where
everything
is
happening. The tension builds up until the
very last moment where we see the failing
experiment of a human clone. A certain
number of sporadic hints should help in
discovering what is going on. (Beewun
was the winner of the 2013 IAC Peter Coles festival).
TONY BRAMHAM - Colin Balls (GB)
CvB Gold Medal, Prize for outstanding
Image Production.
We don't have to go into the details why
this sequence was a great success: this
UK documentary is hard to beat.
Especially the soundtrack was highly
appreciated, although you should
manage well the English language and
some of the dialect accents. It might
be a handicap for the sequence e.g. in
France. ‘Journalistic’ photography is of
the highest standard (no surprise with
Colin here).
