Gradually the number of 'keepers' increased from each time out until there were
a range of images available. Some of these stand on their own as individual
images but others are better taken together. This provided the impetus to put
together a sequence to enter into the Bridgend 5 to 8 Photo Harmony
competition with the aim of showing the freedom and enjoyment of a running
specialist that would not be possible from single images.
The question of whether to choose images or music first when creating this
type of sequence doesn’t have a simple answer. In this case, I had a selection
of land-based images on paths and in fields, and a selection of water based
images mainly taken close to the sea. That gave a natural division of two halves.
But those halves needed to be connected. The music needed to be of a flowing
rhythmic nature, with a positive, upbeat feel to emphasise the running and
freedom of space within the images.
After much searching and listening, the track that stood out from the rest was
The Faiytale Of Time by Yunus, available under a Creative Commons License
from www.jamendo.com. This carried the tags 'piano, classical, emotion,
romantic, documentary, travel, easylistening'. The track proved to be ideal as it
builds pace then has short slow passages not once, but twice. The slow
passages provide the ideal opportunity to break from the running sequences
with images of Lizzie taking on water and food. Transitions at the ends of those
passages allow transfer from one type of running sequence to another.
The images in the sequence are taken on a Canon 350D or 60D with the
majority using a 70-200mm zoom. A few use a standard zoom and some,
including the final few of the sequence, are taken with a 10-22m zoom. Those
final images show Lizzie on the beach at Aberavon. A large expanse of empty
beach. And that’s the great thing about the runner – a perfect excuse to get away
from it all for some peace and quiet.
