AV News 191 - February 2013

As this is the first edition in 2013 may we
take this opportunity to wish you all a
healthy and happy New Year. May we
also thank all those people who
subscribed to the magazine by Direct
Debit as it will make the administering of
future renewals that much easier.
We were pleased to see a number of
you at the recent Great Northern
Festival and hope that someone comes
forward to ensure its future after the
2013 event. It would be a shame if such
a friendly and well supported event dissapeared from the North West region. It
is not just another AV competition, but also an excellent social get together.
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Lady Doreen Pollock
in October. Although she had not been able to attend AV events for a number of
years, we are sure many of you knew her and have fond memories. Our
condolences to Sir George and family.
A few points have been raised within this issue: Ian Nield, writing after
watching Keith Scott's excellent Sunday afternoon 'Great Northern' talk, asks on
page 22 'would it be possible to have some of this information made available in
AV News?' In fact Keith covered in great detail the making of 'Nostalgia' on page
47, Issue 189 and gives more hints and tips each issue as part of his regular
Photoshop tutorials. We hope to possibly include some back issues of the
magazine for people to read via the AV News website - watch this space.
Peter Appleton asks on page 23 'would it be feasible, after events .... to
produce a DVD containing the award winning sequences.' He then goes on to
mention all the copyright issues but doesn't mention an important one - the
authors copyright for their sequence. It would have to be stated as a condition of
entry that this could be done as we feel that there may be quite a number of
authors who show their sucessful work when they visit clubs and would possibly
not want their work shown in this way beforehand. Peter Davies in his letter on
page 42 questions if we are moving away from what is traditional AV - still
images that tell a story - by the inclusion of video clips or moving images. Our
view is that if something, be it one poor image, a fault with the sound, panning
or zooming or video, is unsympathetic and detracts from our viewing experience
- then that sequence will fail. Of course if it is all video - then it is a video and
should be treated as such.
A quick reminder that the closing dates for both the IAC Peter Coles
International and the Adelaide AVFest are the 1st February - ie now! Maybe if
you email Marion for the Pater Coles: or for the Adelaide AVFest, John Hodgson:
there might still be a chance to enter.
We wish you every success.
