AV News 191 - February 2013
John gave us an excellent presentation on Humour, sequences don’t on a
whole go down well in competitions. He said that ‘in jokes’ plus difficulties on
how long to leave up an image for the laughs, are definite problems. As he
said, its being able to have a concept and John certainly knows how to do
this. He took us through some of his humour sequences showing us his first
effort then the new one which worked much better. He even gave us a short
demonstration on using 3D Parameters in PicturesToExe which I found most
enlightening. John finished with his humorous sequence called ‘The
Messiah’, which won the Pollock Medal & the Audience Vote at the Nationals
in 2007, so it can be done, but not often. We certainly need humour though,
it makes for variety.
Next up was Brian Jeffs who took us back to basics. He wanted to
emphasise that you can make an audio visual without too much software
which meant you could make a simple AV quite easily. Brian talked us
through simplicity, audio and visual interpretation concentrating especially on
the third image, registration, especially horizons plus effects with caution. He
said you need to decide on visual interpretation and information and
demonstrated his ideas with short AVs. Brian finished with a sequence called
‘Yellowstone A Sacred Land’ which demonstrated well his use of getting a
third image, with a good choice of music to suit the beautiful images he took
on a recent visit to Yellowstone Park.
Keith Scott finished the day with his presentation on how he made his AV
called ‘Nostalgia’. He showed the ingredients required and how far he had to
travel to get them. How to put all the images together, especially his moving
sky and clock hands. After playing ‘Nostalgia’ Keith then went on to explain
about the IAC and music copyright, Vertus Fluid Mask, Adobe Digital
Negative Converter, Converting old Adobe Audition Sessions, Recorders,
Microphones plus taking us through the software he uses for making his AVs.
All in all an excellent session.
The three day festival drew to a close and all that remained was thanks to
the organisers Wilmslow Guild AV Group, which really boiled down to
Howard & Suzanne Gregory, plus of course the judges, audience, tea and
coffee makers, backroom boys and girls with all the equipment and Bill for
organising the RPS AV Day.
