Usually at this time of year things get
extremely busy, but this year it seems to
have been worse. The weather certainly
has not helped, with some meetings
having to be posponed, judges unable to
get to competitions and annual events
being less well attended because of
forcasted warnings or actual heavy
snowstorms. The first of the casualties
was the Wilmslow Guild 'Open'
Competition scheduled for Friday 25th
January which had to be posponed
when neither the judges nor the audience were able to get there. The judges,
Marion Waine and John Rowell, were unable to get out of Snowdonia and that
also meant that they couldn't officiate at 'Midphot' the day after. (see page 34)
Looking at the Diary on the AV News website, the perceived bad weather
month of February now has no event taking place, but in March and April there
is now something on almost every week. Here in the UK we have had one RPS
Distinction Assessment, one International competition, two Federation annual
AV competitions, the Wilmslow 'Fiesta' and the Leeds Colour & Music
Spectacular public shows, and six Regional Group speaker days making 12
events in 8 weeks. If you managed to get along to some of them - well done!! If
you didn't then there are reports on some in this issue.
Richard Brown recently gave an interesting talk to the Wilmslow members
entitled 'Combining AV & Video - A Brave New World or Business as usual?'
During the talk he posed the question - when does an AV sequence become a
video? Is it when more than 50% is video...or possibly more or less?? It would
appear that the video groups and ourselves do have quite a lot more in common
and could maybe help each other if we viewed each others work. Whilst the
winning sequences from the Peter Coles International are, through the kind
dedication of Marion Waine and John Rowell, shown on the Friday at BIAFF, the
main IAC weekend - we never get the chance to see the award winning videos
at any of our events - maybe that is something for the future?
Tony Collinson, the Secretary of the AV Group, has been beavering away and
has at last managed to put together a list of those lecturers prepared to go out
spreading the 'AV gospel' to both the AV clubs and also (and possibly more
importantly) to potential av'ists in the photographic clubs and societies. There is
room for more names on the list which can be seen on page 47. If you already
go out doing AV talks and demonstrations and would like your name to be
added, please contact Tony.
Malcolm Imhoff has kindly written a series of 'AV Hints & Tips' two of which
appear within these pages. We will feature more in future issues.
A number of people are not enjoying the best of health
including Barb Butler in Australia, who has been in hospital for
a back operation - we hope that you all get well soon.
