AV News 192 - May 2013
An interesting afternoon
Eileen Burtonwood
John Rowell and Marion Waine are friends. I love their work. They know I
have an interest in photography and video, but understand that running a
busy B&B, doesn't allow the time I need to really get ‘stuck in’. They kindly
asked me to come along to The IAC Peter Coles International Audio Visual
Competition on the 9th & 10th March, Mothers Day prevented attendance on
Sunday, so I was only able to make the afternoon of Saturday.
I cannot comment on individual AV's, but as a whole the 20 contributions I
saw made for a very interesting and enjoyable four hours. The venue in Capel
Curig in beautiful Snowdonia was full of interesting people: some of whom had
travelled many miles; many of whom knew one another but all of whom were
friendly and keen to answer my many questions.
The session was well organised with a minute or two between AV's for the
judges to make their deliberations and for the attendees to discuss between
themselves in hushed tones. Tea/Coffee and a selection of biscuits were on
hand and the time passed so quickly I couldn't comprehend it was time for me
to leave and let the others go to The Tyn-y-Coed Inn for an evening meal prior
to the evening session.
I implore anyone who has even an inkling of interest to go along to one of
the meetings or competitions. You will not be disappointed I assure you.
Thank you to everyone for making me so welcome.

Have I been watching too much Star Trek?

Unusually for an AV event, the sun didn't shine, in fact we even had a few snow
flurries over the course of the weekend, but nothing compared to the snow that
some parts of the country experienced in the subsequent days and weeks. The
IAC Peter Coles International AV Competition was organised in association
with the North Wales and Wirral AV Group. All the arrangements in the run up
to the event had been made by Marion Waine, who is to be congratulated on
a very smooth running operation. The event started Saturday lunchtime with a
pre-booked sandwich lunch in the Tyn-y-Coed Hotel, which is about three
minutes' walk from Capel Curig Community Centre where the Competition was
being held. The Centre which was formerly the village's old primary school has
been completely re-furbished and renovated to an extremely high standard,
complete with under floor heating.
The Master of Ceremonies for the Competition was John Rowell, who ably
carried out his role under the watchful eye of Marion. Jill K. Bunting and John
Smith made up the projection team, and each sequence was shown without a
hitch. There was a large screen which, because the Competition is held in a
comfortably sized room, we could all see and enjoy the sixty five entries.
