AV News 179 - February 2010
Personally, I am still fascinated by the wonderful sequences I've seen made
entirely from stills and I find that an absorbing challenge, but some think I'm a
bit of a dinosaur!!
My second query has to do with making AVs on a Macintosh. I have been
using the program "Fotomagico" for several years now with some degree of
success. In Australia now, in order to get APS Approval, the AV competitions
must accept sequences which will run standalone on a Mac and a Mac is
provided as well as a PC, for both judging and exhibition. It seems however,
that overseas only .exe files will be accepted in competitions, so that excludes
Mac workers.
With the vast number of people in the UK involved in AV there must surely
be a number of Mac workers. I would love to know how they go about
competing, what program is used etc. I am ready now to try my hand at
international competition but this is a major stumbling block. I do know of
Lanterne Magique, but my French is woeful !! Any advice would be most
Welcome.
Small Portable Recorders

In the last Issue, there were several items mentioning the small hand-held
portable recorders which are becoming popular. Readers may be interested to
know that "Understanding Audio" has an in-depth guide to choosing such
machines - an analysis of which features to look for, which features are
important, which are unnecessary and which are "window-dressing bells and
whistles" that you'll probably never use. There is also a guide to what the terms
used in specifications mean, suggestions as to the sort of values to look for and
audio examples of what various values "sound like."

Thank you for the wonderful double-page colour spread in Issue 178. Thanks
also to Keith Scott for the review of the Sony PCM D50. The only thing missing
was the price! It's q Z]HH
