AV News 184 - May 2011 IAC GEOFFREY ROUND Betty Collinson I was invited to write about my experience of the weekend of the 12th & 13th March, by the AV News as a 'first timer'. I must say that I felt very much at ease and welcomed by everyone and in particular the ladies, Carole Bagshaw, Suzanne Walker and Maggie Imhoff (even though she was a judge!) They made me feel as if I was an old friend and I was even allowed into the 'inner sanctum' of the kitchen - to help with the washing up, which you ladies will appreciate, means you have arrived! The whole weekend went like clockwork and praise to Marion and John for all the hard work and preparation to detail which was apparent as the weekend unfolded. We were provided with a dinner-choice list prior to attending, resulting in a lovely time-and-hassle-free evening meal on the Saturday evening. A sandwich lunch in the same hotel was provided on both days in a small lounge with a lovely open fire. The judges were limited by John to one minute per entry to write their comments and have additional sessions to collectively decide who were the 'winners' to receive the various trophies, see page 25 for results. The entries were mixed, some very short and others (for me) too lengthy, but there were sequences which would appeal to all. I personally enjoyed the wayward 'Runaway Chicken' and 'Little Ted's Big Adventure' as they appealed to the Sunday School teacher in me. I was moved to tears by the 'Letters from Wilfred' and the 'Special' (children) who bring hope and joy into our lives. I was saddened by the loss of a whole tribe who were wiped out as portrayed in 'The Lost Indians of Patagonia'. The final touch from Marion was to provide a small token for those who were 'mentioned' by the judges - apparently this is a new innovation. Sadly not everyone can be a 'winner' but to my non-photographical eye, they were all winners and made for a wonderful first-time experience of this International Audio Visual Competition and hopefully not my last. Film Maker turns to Audio Visual Alan Colegrave FACI ARPS I guess it was nearly 40 years ago that I built an amplifier to boost the signal from my stereo ¼” tape recorder so it would power a relay. This was connected to the changeover device on my slide projector. If I wanted to change slides, all I needed to do was to hit the microphone on the correct channel. Crude as it was, it worked and worked well enough to show an audio visual presentation to a number of clubs/societies. A little later I bought a 'GAF' AV setup which did not work as well as the box said and consequently spent most of its life in the said box. Page 21
