It is with sadness that shortly after
announcing the death of Peter Coles in
the last issue, we heard that Kieran
O'Loughlin from Ireland had passed
away. Then, just as we were about to
go to press with this issue, we learnt of
the death of WAVES AV Group
Chairman Ivor Roberts. It is always a
loss to the AV community when people
pass away, but even more so when
they were such active members as
Kieran and Ivor. Tributes to them both
appear on pages 48 to 52. We send our condolences to their families.
It would appear from the number of new groups that are being formed and
the emergence of sub groups within some Camera Clubs, that at the present
time Audio Visual is really taking off with more and more people taking part.
We wish these new groups every success and look forward to seeing their
sequences at future events. Maybe even at the National Championships this
September. You still have time to enter your sequence if you are quick, which
reminds us to make sure we get ours posted off!
You may remember that last November we were asked to publish a
statement which read: 'Due, in part, to the drastic fall-off of support of The
Society distinctions in AV, the Audio Visual panel is suspended with
immediate effect. A working group will be set up to include The Society's
interests in Audio Visual and the current international standards, the well
progressed culture for time based media in colleges and universities, the
moving image sector and the new technologies particularly of convergence
and the web. 'Initially, this group will meet in the Autumn and report back to
the November meeting of the Distinctions Advisory Board. The anticipation
is that a distinction panel encompassing TBM and AV will be formed.'
Then in February we were asked to publish that: 'The new working group
met on Thursday 28 October 2010 to consider the way forward and have now
made the following initial recommendations'. These were then listed and the
statement concluded by stating that: 'the Time Based Media Working Group
will meet again late-February or March forming recommendations to the DAB
and Council.' By the time you are reading this almost a year will have passed
and we haven't heard the outcome of these deliberations or been asked to
publish a further statement - ah well - we wait for an official announcement
in anticipation!
We hope you enjoy what is left of the Summer and are all looking forward
to a new season when AV activities start again in earnest. We look forward
to seeing you all at the 'Nationals' or at some other event
around the country.
