This connection may be in the connector of the lead, as in Figure 3 above,
or a permanent link built into the input socket, as Figure 4 below.
Many input sockets are wired with this permanent link built in (there are
very good reasons for this, outside the scope of this article) but you can't
tell by looking.
The next stage of complication is where the unbalanced mic input socket
is stereo. Again, you can't tell by looking at it - you must read the
instruction book. Normally you will wish to feed the (mono) mic signal to
both channels to put it 'centre stage'. In this case you will need a lead
wired as Figure 5 with one signal lead connected to both channels, and
the other connected to screen as before. This connection will always be in
the lead - the socket must be 'free' to accept stereo signals if that is ever
wanted.
