Adobe Photoshop - Variations

In this edition we are going to take a look at one of the oldest functions within
Photoshop - 'Variations'. This is a rather useful and relatively simple often
overlooked function that's been around so long that I can't remember in which
version it first appeared, possibly as early as version one released in 1990.
As each new Photoshop is released containing ever more powerful and
perhaps attractive high tech functions it seems inevitable that some of the
simple basic functions become either forgotten or sidestepped. This is
unfortunate because the 'Variations' function contains some of the most
fundamental colour correction and density controls that would be instantly
recognised by traditional darkroom colour workers, albeit now in digital form.
But before getting too involved with 'Variations' I want to go off at a
complete tangent to highlight something rather important to all AV workers,
