Cézanne’ s Aix-en-Provence
FRANCE
Elegant and endlessly walkable, Aix-en-Provence rewards, especially in the autumn, winter or spring months. This is Cézanne’ s hometown, and his presence lingers everywhere, from the shaded Cours Mirabeau, lined with plane trees and 17th-century mansions, to his atelier on the northern edge of town, preserved almost exactly as he left it. Art lovers are well served. The Musée Granet holds an outstanding collection ranging from Cézanne to Giacometti, while the Hôtel de Caumont – Centre d’ Art hosts exhibitions in a beautifully restored townhouse. Smaller galleries thread through the old town’ s narrow streets, many showcasing contemporary Provençal artists. Mornings are best spent at the Place Richelme or Place des Prêcheurs markets, where stalls overflow with lavender, olives, cheese, and seasonal produce. Wander past fountains and honey-stone façades of the old quarter, or climb to the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. Travel by train to Aix-en-Provence or fly to Marseille and let us book a car transfer for you.
