The most diconcerting part of park assist is watching the steering wheel spin a round without any input from you. but as the car moves backwards, readings from the sensors around the edge of the vehicle are being fed to the steering wheel, so it knows that position of the car in relation to the cars and the kerb - that helps make the whole manoeuver far smoother.
