A fictional short story offering a glimpse behind the eyes of a young girl on the autism spectrum .

Friday afternoon and the shrill of the hometime bell jolted the class into excited thoughts about what the weekend would entail and the surprises that may await them .

One child was thinking about only that moment in time . She sat for a moment , waiting for the others to scurry off like a horde of mice .
Her best friend smiled and waved at her excitedly ; she was off to her dad ’ s for the weekend . She mimed , “ I ’ ll call you later !” and with that , she was gone .
The safe environment , the regularity of the hometime regime . It was familiar and therefore comforting and not full of surprises . Carefully packing her bag , the girl left the safety of the warm classroom and thought of what was ahead .
