One of Great Britain ’ s greatest heroes , Horatio Nelson started his naval career , aged 12 years old , on 1 January 1771 , when he reported to the third-rate HMS Raisonnable as an ordinary seaman and coxswain under his maternal uncle , Captain Maurice Suckling .
Nelson would have been taught all the necessary skills , such as navigation and tying knots .
