he utility corridor has become more congested and it is becoming more difficult for companies in the planning and construction stage to budget for their projects. Accurate utility detection, identification and mapping has become vital in reducing costs for pipeline construction and maintenance. A new standard AS 5488 Classifications for Subsurface Utility Information (SUI) has recently been released that gives companies a way of planning or acquiring an accurate mapping solution to reduce unwanted costs of cable or pipeline strikes. This can all be done by using the current technology or by companies that specialise in this area. By utilising the AS 5488 SUI standards and incorporating the right detection equipment, utility asset owners can reduce costs through a reduction in utility strikes, reduced time in locating unknown services and creating more accurate mapping for projects. This mean massive savings in the long run especially when planning for any future development. In most circumstances a standard EMF pipe & cable locator will locate 80% to 90% of your utility assets and purchasing a locater with lots of functions and features is not generally required. Traditional locators use common functions like Peak and Null thus giving the operator the information required to detect if they have a clean EMF signal or distorted one. Newer units on the market have smart modes making locating simpler. These modes analyse the peak and null mode together and reduces the time to locate. Like any automatic mode you should always revert back to your traditional methods if unsure of accuracy before marking the ground. Other advanced technologies include Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
