Brunswick Street Set for Million Dollar Water Upgrade A series of complex water main renewal works will replace 100 year old water mains along Brunswick Street Fitzroy from January to May 2014. City West Water contractors will be replacing approximately one kilometre of water mains along both sides of Brunswick Street between Alexandra Parade and Johnston Street in stages to minimise disruption and ensure the works are completed as quickly as possible. City West Water Acting CEO Geoff Gardiner said the $1.4 million project is part of an ongoing program to replace ageing water mains across inner areas of Melbourne. “Each year we invest around $100 million in replacing old water mains in some of the oldest parts of Melbourne, and with these water mains approaching 100 years of age, they must be replaced,” Gardiner said. “Brunswick Street is one of Melbourne’s most popular retail and dining strips, so replacing the water mains now means that we remove the risk of a major burst which could result in costly damage and interruptions to businesses and other services in the area.” To minimise impact on surrounding businesses, works will be carried out in stages, one block at a time, with some works taking place at late night and on weekends, as well as making the most of lower traffic volumes during school holidays. and in recent years, we’ve carried out water main renewals in similar settings around inner areas of the city which have all been successful, and we’re confident this project will deliver the same outcome.” During the works, water supply should not be affected without advance notice, and trams will operate as usual. Parking will be restricted in small sections as crews move works along the road. Outdoor dining may be affected while works are in the vicinity.
