EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to the first edition of Govlink
magazine for 2014.
Inside this issue we look at managing your
organisation’s largest single expense – the
vehicle fleet. Ken Thompson writes that for
some time now the practice of managing fleets
has been undervalued and looks at how it has
developed into a strategic management role
going beyond simply acquiring/re-registering
vehicles, organising maintenance and
managing the fuel bill.
NICTA’s Dean Economou and Nicola Gracey
report on digital foundations for local
government, arguing that as councils across
Australia evolve to deliver increasingly diverse
services, ongoing technology advances mean
that the business of local government can use
a whole new set of digital tools to connect
with residents and improve operations.
We speak candidly with Parramatta Lord
Mayor Cr John Chedid about how Parramatta
is stepping up as the business and economic
capital of Western Sydney.
Govlink I Issue 1 2014
The Safety Institute of Australia’s Sue Bottrell
reports on the project for certification of
generalist OHS professionals and practitioners
and how it represents a landmark for the
recognition of safety professionals.
Trevor Thornton reports on how biohazardous
waste is entering the domestic waste/recycling
streams and how your council can effectively
manage it.
Also inside John Fleming reports on the three
main technologies that form the backbone
of an integrated security solution. And
Bryan Douglas explains the conversion of
conventional street and public lighting to LED
technology taking place around the country.
I would be very interested to hear your
thoughts on our magazine or any of the issues
addressed inside. Please feel free to drop me a
