30 SECURITY Ensuring your business and any contractors you use are compliant with workplace laws, will help you to minimise the risk that your business will be held legally responsible for underpayments or non-compliance by a contractor or subcontractor; minimise the risk that your brand and reputation will be damaged by the actions of a contractor or subcontractor; build sustainable relationships with your contractors; improve service quality and help improve employment terms and conditions, as well as engagement and motivation, for people working in your supply chain. When choosing a security provider it is important to determine what quality really means in the overall context of your organisation’s security needs, public image, governance and compliance obligations. The delivery of quality security services is not compatible with the lowest price, value for money does not necessarily follow. Your private security provider is a vital partner in operating of your business, so it is crucial that you maintain an open and transparent relationship. Among some of the issues to consider before choosing a provider include: • Strategy – does the provider have a clear strategic direction that allows it to deliver value to its customers; • Processes – does the provider have a robust mechanism in place to ensure a consistent quality of service; • Commercial relationships – does the provider have a strong and transparent relationship with its customers and suppliers; • Financial management – is the provider financially viable and do they have sufficient resources to meet current and future obligations; • Resources – does the provider have adequate premises, procedures and equipment to sustain its business. When it comes to managing risk, security managers can often find it challenging to convince senior management to choose quality over lowest price. That said, it is important to understand that making the wrong choice can expose both you and your organisation to unnecessary risk.
