Whitening of the tongue
TED, a 32-year-old single man, is
referred by his dentist for further
assessment of an asymptomatic region
of whitening on the dorsum of his
tongue. There are no other mucosal
changes elsewhere in his mouth.
Ted has no previous history of any
oral pathology. He has recently had
an URTI, which lingered and required
two courses of systemic antibiotics.
Ted has no history of serious medical
illness, and he does not take any regular
medication. He smokes eight cigarettes
a day, has smoked for seven years and
drinks 10 beers over the weekend.
Dr Talacko is an oral medicine
specialist and an oral and maxillofacial
pathologist in Melbourne, Victoria.
