DAY 3 Hobart
At leisure to explore as you choose . The city brims with history and is bursting with creativity so there ’ s no shortage of things to view and do . Top sights include the converted Georgian warehouses of Salamanca , MONA ’ s worldrenowned art , the Cascade Brewery for brews and delightful gardens , or maybe set your sights on Mount Wellington . If you ’ re here on a Saturday , follow the crowds to Salamanca Market , one of the largest outdoor markets in Australia .
DAY 4 Hobart / Bicheno
Collect your hire car and get your exploration of Tassie underway . If you wish , you could detour slightly in order to visit the fascinating Port Arthur Historic Site , otherwise you ’ ll find an array of towns to break up your journey and grab refreshments ( 110 miles ).
DAY 5 Bicheno
Unveil the delights of this relaxed beachside town , best known for its stellar seafood and proximity to Freycinet National Park . Bicheno is also part of the East Coast Whale Trail and there are plenty of whale-watching spots from May to December along a coastal walkway .
DAY 6 Bicheno / St Helens
Before departing , ensure you glimpse the Bicheno Blowhole . Continue your travels north along the coast to St Helens , which overlooks Georges Bay . It ’ s a great place for outdoor adventures of all kinds with the Bay of Fires , St Helens Point Conservation Area and Binalong Bay in easy reach ( 47 miles ).
DAY 7 St Helens / Launceston
Drive inland to Launceston , hailed as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy . Be sure to take a walk beneath the high walls of Cataract Gorge or book a cruise along the Tamar ’ s waters before feasting on paddock-to-plate meals and the Tamar Valley ’ s wines ( 80 miles ).
DAY 8 Launceston / Stanley
During today ’ s drive we recommend stopping in the unique town of Burnie , which is full of artisanal treasures as well as a variety of shops and restaurants . On arrival in Stanley , you won ’ t be able to miss its towering landmark , The Nut , a sheer-sided , flat-topped volcanic plug , which you can climb or opt for a ride on the chairlift ( 140 miles ).
DAY 9 Stanley / Cradle Mountain
Return back along the coast and then veer inland to majestic Cradle Mountain National Park . Part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area , this is the place to discover Tasmania ’ s alpine treats ( 114 miles ).
DAY 10 Cradle Mountain
Walking tracks radiate into the park giving ample opportunity to get out and explore its rugged beauty . You ’ ll notice Cradle Mountain as it rises steeply from the shores of Dove Lake , creating a spectacular scene from Marions Lookout or the lake edge . Snap a picture of Lake St Clair , which is Australia ’ s deepest lake and fringed with mountains and cool-temperate rainforest , or admire stunning Dove Lake and its classic mountain views .
DAY 11 Cradle Mountain / Strahan
Travel towards Strahan , a remote harbourside town and fantastic stepping stone to the west of Tasmania . Outdoor adventures are plentiful , there ’ s an outrageous abundance of fresh food , and a dark-yet-rich history all surrounded by national parks and wildlife refuges ( 91 miles ).
DAY 12 Strahan
We recommend taking a cruise along the serene Gordon River ( at extra expense ) or perhaps stroll through cooltemperate rainforest to reach Hogarth Falls . For wilder water , head to Ocean Beach , to witness the majestic force of the Southern Ocean .
