Break your journey at the friendly hamlet of Tennant Creek , site of Australia ’ s last gold rush in the 1930s . A sacred site here is Karlu Karlu ( Devils Marbles ), a series of ancient granite boulders that defy gravity .
With a languid tropical climate and laidback vibe , Darwin is where ancient Aboriginal culture melds with a modern city lifestyle overlooking the Timor Sea . Spend a day or two to discover its sparkling harbour , fascinating WWII history , and tasty Asian-influenced food . An hour ’ s drive from Darwin is Litchfield National Park known for its tumbling waterfalls , termite mound ‘ forests ’ and hiking trails .

The Northern Territory ’ s third largest town , Katherine is a great base for exploring this region where the outback meets the tropics . Its star attraction is undoubtedly Nitmiluk ( Katherine Gorge ). This series of gorges were carved by the Katherine River and are best explored on a boat trip .
