Napier
DAY 1 Auckland / Tauranga
Collect your hire car and head south to Tauranga , a metropolitan hub surrounded by the Bay of Plenty ’ s beautiful coastline . Downtown Tauranga has several historically significant areas to view and The Strand waterfront area is modern and always buzzing thanks to an array of pubs , eateries and live music ( 140 miles ).
DAY 2 Tauranga / Napier
Before setting off , you may wish to hike Tauranga ’ s iconic Mount Maunganui . Choose from two scenic tracks and head to the summit , which takes around 40 minutes , where you ’ ll be rewarded with impressive views . Then drive further south to the Hawke ’ s Bay region and the charming town of Napier ( 173 miles ).
DAY 3 Napier
With street after street of stunning and beautifully-restored Art Deco buildings , it ’ s little wonder Napier is often referred to as a 1930s film set , and one of the best ways to enjoy the streetscape is on a self-guided walk . It ’ s also home to many fine wineries , fabulous restaurants , bars and cafés .
DAY 4 Napier / Havelock North
Travel the short distance to Havelock North , a pretty country town known for art , honey and friendly restaurants . Stroll through the village and explore the variety of boutique shops , cafés , restaurants and speciality food stores . It ’ s also the perfect base for exploring the Tukituki River Valley as well as numerous wineries ( 15 miles ).
DAY 5 Havelock North / Martinborough
Drive on to the picturesque town of Martinborough , the winery hub of the Wairarapa region . With inviting cellar doors plus annual food and wine events to discover , it ’ s well worth raising a glass to ( 156 miles ).
DAY 6 Martinborough / Wellington
Perhaps fit in a guided wine tour or self-guided cycle ride through the vineyards . Make time for one last indulgent meal at one of the many tempting restaurants before you complete the tour by driving on to Wellington ( 50 miles ).

DAY 1 Wellington / Martinborough
Collect your hire car and drive to Martinborough , which is located in the Wairarapa region and considered to be one of the most important wine regions in the world . Packed with colonial charm , the town has plenty of art galleries and museums that showcase local art works , as well as some enticing restaurants , not to mention Pinot Noir ( 50 miles ).
DAY 2 Martinborough
While away an hour or so strolling Martinborough ’ s quaint town square , which has a variety of unique boutiques and plenty of eateries where you can grab a bite to eat . This afternoon , look forward to a private afternoon tour , during which you will visit four vineyards , one is large and the remainder much smaller and more off-the-beaten-track . You ’ ll have the opportunity to taste the local tipple and learn all there is to know about wine making .
DAY 3 Martinborough / Greytown
Linger a while longer if you wish in Martinborough before you drive the short distance to Greytown , considered to be one of the North Island ’ s prettiest towns . Brimming with beautiful Victorian buildings , rural landscapes and tree-lined avenues , it ’ s surrounded by rolling olive groves and sprawling farmlands ( 12 miles ).
DAY 4 Greytown
Spend the day as you wish . Perhaps hire a bike and pedal along some of the many cycle routes , go olive tasting , or chocolate tasting at Schoc Chocolate Studio , or buy some provisions in town and picnic along the riverside . If you prefer , drive slightly further afield and explore more of the Wairarapa region , which boasts spectacular coastlines , wide valleys and a slower pace of life .
DAY 5 Greytown / Wellington
Take in more of the lovely surroundings and perhaps buy a few foodie treats to take away with you , before you return to Wellington where you return your car and depart for your onward journey .
