Naracoorte Caves
Where better to succumb to temptation than in South Australia ’ s acclaimed wine regions : the Barossa Valley , Clare Valley , Coonawarra , McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills . Dotted amongst the endless green vines , numerous cellar doors vie for your attention to taste the wide range of wine alongside plentiful local produce . Lying eight miles off the coast is Kangaroo Island , just a 50 minute ferry ride from the mainland ( be sure you book well in advance ). The island is a wildlife haven with seals basking on the beaches , koalas gorging on gum trees plus kangaroos , wallabies and penguins at almost every turn . The scenery is equally spectacular with its raw and rugged coastline , surf-pounded cliffs , becalmed coves , sweeping sands and the aptly-named Remarkable Rocks . In the equally inspiring Flinders Ranges and Outback , marvel at awesome Wilpena Pound , a shockingly large amphitheatre , venture further into the Outback to Coober Pedy to find the world ’ s largest opal fields or , enjoy a nature ’ s nightime show like you ’ ve never seen before .
For fine coastal scenery and further culinary experiences , make a beeline for the Fleurieu Peninsula . Spend quality time in nature ’ s playground discovering the charming towns such as bustling Victor Harbor , Willunga and Goolwa . For seaside escapes where you can lounge on sandy white shores , wind your way across the Yorke Peninsula . Alternatively , dive into the Eyre Peninsula , best known for its aquatic activities , calm beaches and warm waters or , head south along the coast through the Coorong , a thin sliver of land with sand dunes , chains of salt water lagoons and deep blue ocean . Nearby is the charming seaside town of Robe while further south is the Limestone Coast , whose natural wonders include the Naracoorte Caves , South Australia ’ s only World Heritage Listed Site . Australia ’ s longest river , the mighty Murray , also snakes its way through South Australia . Explore by houseboat , and as you ply the waters admire deep limestone canyons and bountiful wildlife in the wetlands .
