Do GPAs Predict How Well a Student Performs on the Georgia Teacher
Certification Exam?
Keaira Leverette, Dr. Bonnie Chambers
Special Education, Albany State University, Albany, GA
Research Question and Significance: Do GPAs predict how well a student performs on a
Georgia Teacher Certification Exam? This question strikes a lot of conflict because different
people have different views about it. Based on my research, more people feel that a student's
GPA does not predict how well he/she performs on a teacher certification exam or any other
standardized test. Most students agree that it is unfair to base their potential success on exams
and on their GPA because neither of these assessments can measure potential for becoming a
successful teacher. Students may acquire the content knowledge or the basic skills that the
teacher certification exam is designed to measure however, test anxiety may interfere
therefore, and a student's true understanding of the material is not conveyed. Testing of that
nature can be seen as oppression.
