Veterans Fair To Provide Resources For Local Vets

The City of Aurora’s Veterans Advisory Council, Aurora University, and the DuPage County Veterans Center are co-sponsoring an area-wide Veterans Fair on Tuesday, June 18 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.

All veterans and their families are invited to the fair that will be held on the campus of Aurora University in the Perry Theatre, 1305 Kenilworth Place.

The Veterans Fair will begin with a presentation of colors from the Aurora Police Department Honor Guard and remarks from Mayor Tom Weisner and Aurora University officials. Every hour, special veterans-related presentations will be held in the Perry Theatre.

Throughout the duration of the fair, informational booths will be stationed in the theatre’s lobby. Booths include the Aurora University Center for Adult and Graduate Studies, DuPage County Veterans Center, Chicago Regional Veterans Benefits Agency, and many more.

The Veterans Fair is free and open to the public.

Free Movies In The Park Return For Another Season

Families looking for affordable entertainment this summer can take advantage of free movie nights starting June 22 at Phillips Park, 1000 Ray Moses Drive.

“Movies in the Park” features Hollywood-hit films on an outdoor big screen on select Saturday nights during the summer. Family-fun games, contests, and other pre-event activities will be held at 8 p.m., and the movies will start 30 minutes after sunset, which is between 9 and 9:15 p.m.

This season’s movie schedule includes:

June 22 – Rise of the Guardians (PG)

July 6 – Dolphin Tale (PG)

July 20 – Wreck- It- Ralph (PG)

August 3 – The Avengers (PG-13)

Movies will be shown on the big screen adjacent to the sledding hill and the skate/BMX park. Patrons should bring their own chairs, blankets and bug spray. The concession stand will be open, and parking is available at the Phillips Park Aquatic Center, 828 Montgomery Road.

The City of Aurora also welcomed four new aldermen to the Aurora City Council: Theodoros Mesiacos of the 3rd Ward, William Donnell of the 4th Ward, Edward J. Bugg of the 9th Ward, and Lynne Johnson of the 10th Ward.

The ceremony included a Presentation of Colors by the East Aurora High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps with the National Anthem, and other musical selections, performed by the Metea Valley High School Varsity Singers.

The Village of Montgomery bid farewell to long-serving Mayor Marilyn Micholini and welcomed in a new board.

Aurora and Montgomery hold Inaugurations

The Mayoral and City Council Inauguration Ceremony was held in May 7. Judge Judith Brawka, Chief Judge of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit Court administered the Oath of Office to seven members of the Aurora City Council and Mayor Thomas J. Weisner.

Four Aldermen returned to seats on the Aurora City Council, including Alderman-at-Large Robert J. O’Connor, 7th Ward Alderman Scheketa Hart-Burns, and 2nd Ward Alderman Juany Garza.
