Energy-Climate-Livability : Geotech in Changing Times
Climate change is a rapidly evolving threat to our daily lives , with significant implications for livability and global infrastructure . It is inherently linked to our dependence on fossil fuels and affects water and food security , urban development , human behavior , consumption patterns , and national and international policies . The complex and far-reaching consequences of the energy-climatelivability challenge are already testing existing vulnerabilities in all sectors , disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations and exacerbating social inequalities . Energy Geotech plays a central role in addressing the evolving energy-climate-livability challenge , from resource recovery , transportation , consumption and conservation , to waste management , carbon sequestration and infrastructure adaptation . New engineering solutions require a comprehensive understanding of sediments , fractured rocks , complex fluids and underlying subsurface coupled processes .
J . Carlos Santamarina ( Professor , Georgia Tech ) graduated from Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and completed graduate studies at the Universities of Maryland and Purdue . His research team combines experimental and numerical methods to study geomaterials in the context of energy geoscience and engineering , with contributions from resource recovery to energy and waste geostorage . He delivered the 50th Terzaghi Lecture on Energy Geotechnology , was a British Geotechnical Association Touring Lecturer , is member of both Argentinean National Academies , and a recipient of ASTM ’ s Hogentogler Award , the Korean Geotechnical Society Award , and Saudi Arabia ’ s Tarek al- Qasabi Award .
