Spotlight on: The Siberian Husky
Description: Siberian Huskies are strong, compact, working sled dogs. Common coat colors include black and white, red and white, brown, gray and white, silver, wolf-gray, sable and white, red-orange with black tips, and dark gray and white. Their eyes come in blue, brown, amber, or any combination thereof, and can be half blue and half brown( parti-eyed). Huskies can also have one blue eye and one brown eye( bi-eyed). They are often confused with Alaskan Malamutes, who are very similar, but are generally larger than Huskies.
Temperament: Siberian Huskies are loving, gentle, playful, happy-go-lucky dogs that are fond of their families. They are high energy dogs, especially when young, and need much physical and mental exercise, or they can be destructive. Loyal and affectionate, they are good with children and other pets if raised with them from puppyhood. Huskies do have a strong prey drive, though, and owners should take precautions if there are other pets in the household, particularly cats. Huskies are very intelligent and trainable, but they will only obey a command if they see the human is stronger-minded than themselves. They can be challenging for inexperienced dog owners. This breed is very independent, so training takes patience, consistency, and an understanding of the Arctic dog character. If you are not this dog’ s 100 % firm, confident, consistent pack leader, he may take advantage, becoming willful and mischievous. Not big barkers, they do like to howl and get bored easily. They are wonderful companions for people who are aware of what to expect, and are willing to put time and energy into them.
Average Height / Weight: Generally 21- 23 inches tall, and between 35- 60 pounds.
Health Issues: Siberian Huskies are prone to hip dysplasia, ectopy, eye issues, such as juvenile cataracts and corneal dystrophy, and a skin issue known as zinc responsive dermatitis, which improves with zinc supplements.
Exercise: Huskies need a fair amount of exercise, including a daily walk or job, but should not be excessively exercised in warm weather. Huskies make an excellent jogging companion, as long as it is not too hot. A large yard with a high fence is recommended for this breed, who does like to run and roam.
Life Expectancy: About 12- 15 years.
Grooming: Their coat sheds heavily twice a year. During that time, they need to be brushed and combed daily. You should not bathe them often, though, as it will dry out their fur and skin.
