A Note From The Editor:
Happy news for horse lovers! After decades of attempts to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City, the tireless efforts of an animal advocacy organization, NYCLASS( New Yorkers for Clean, Livable & Safe Streets), may finally pay off. Recent tragedies, including the deaths of a teenaged tourist, Romanch Mahajan, and several horses throughout the past few summers, have finally caught and held the attention of political leaders in the state. Council Member Christopher Marte of Manhattan is proposing Intro 0943, also known as " Romanch ' s Law," that would phase out the industry by June of 2028. The bill has 28 council sponsors, and is expected to pass. Some may be sad to see the beautiful horses go, and a carriage ride through Central Park can be a sweet and memorable experience, but the industry has been plagued for many years now with accusations of irresponsible and uncaring operators only out for a buck, with little regard for the horses themselves. Logically, how is it wise- or humane- to expect such a sensitive animal to safely navigate and deal with the inherent risks and chaos of NYC... amidst bumperto-bumper cars, trucks, taxis, buses, motorcycles, scooters, and hundreds of pedestrians? Supporters say the bill is necessary to protect both horses and people, and proponents outnumber the carriage drivers and their union leaders by more than five to one. A vote could come as early as this month. Chicago banned horse-drawn carriages in 2020; Philadelphia did too, in June of this year. Let ' s hope NYC follows suit and does the right thing before more casualties occur. A network of sanctuaries and rescue organizations are standing by, ready to welcome retired horses should carriage drivers relinquish them. Tales online of the rescued Ridglan Beagles continue to charm dog lovers who have followed their progress since being released from an animal testing laboratory in April. Should this bill pass, I look forward to a flurry of photos, videos, and stories on social media of the newly freed horses, no longer having to worry about dodging traffic and breathing exhaust fumes, just living their lives, the way they deserve.
