Summer Heat Alert!

When temperatures rise, all dogs are at risk of overheating, but brachycephalic- or flat-faced- breeds face an even greater danger. Their shortened noses and narrowed airways make it much harder to cool themselves by panting, putting them at a significantly higher risk of heat exhaustion and life-threatening heatstroke.
Common brachycephalic breeds include Bulldogs( English and French), Pugs, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Brussels Griffons, Japanese Chins, and Bullmastiffs.
To keep these dogs safe, avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day. Always provide fresh water, shade, and access to air conditioning or fans. Never leave any dog in a parked car even for a minute- as temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Watch for warning signs, such as excessive panting, noisy breathing, drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting, collapse, or confusion.
If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of cool( not ice-cold) water, wet the body with cool water, and seek emergency veterinary care without delay.
Brachycephalic breeds are extremely prone to overheating.
